Summary: Bashir and Sisko take some time to relax from the war after they crash land in "Rocks and Shoals".
The sun was approaching the horizon as he left the cave, bathing everything in site with an orangey-gold tint. Julian paused a moment to let the suns last rays warm his skin, left chilled by the dull light in the long exit tunnel.
“The Captain is patrolling by the bay.” The woman on guard duty informed him as he turned to her, his question not even past his lips. He nodded and set off in the proper direction, shimmying with ease through the boulders leading to the cliff base.
Sure enough, he spotted Captain Sisko with ease, strolling the shoreline with phaser rifle in hand. Julian hailed him, and then jogged through the sand when the other man’s figure paused to wait for him. He slowed as he approached the point where Sisko stood, and together they moved at a brisk walk down the beach.
“How’s Dax?” the Captain asked as the pair carefully scanned the horizon, sand shifting with an odd squelching sound beneath their feet.
“Asleep.” Julian sighed. “She’ll be alright… but I’d still be happier if we had some proper medical equipment.”
“I know doctor. But it’s just not possible at the moment.”
Julian’s soft response of “I know” was barely audible.
The pair continued in silence until they reached the far end of the bay and turned back. Julian paused to study the sun, half below the horizon. Ben stopped when he realized Julian wasn’t with him and turned back. The doctor was staring off into the distance, but he wasn’t sure that he was seeing this sunset, on this planet. The man had been tense all day, now his features seemed too peaceful for his mind to be at this place and time. Considering the amount of stress they had all been under in recent months, Ben hated to drag the doctor back to the present, but it needed to be done.
Julian started at the hand on his shoulder, and dragged himself back to reality. “It’s beautiful…” he whispered, and then sighed. “Do you remember your first sunset, sir?”
Ben thought about it as they walked, eventually shaking his head.
“I can’t say that I do. You?”
“Yes.”
Ben considered for a moment that it was probably a good memory to leave such a relaxed look on Julian. After a moment’s indecision, he decided he’d like to hear it. They could all use some good memories after the last week. “Tell me about it later.”
Julian looked over at him in confusion, but nodded. They continued on in silence until they reached the end of their patrol, returning to the cave entrance just as the sun slipped below the horizon and the first gently twinkling stars began to appear. Ben dismissed the guard on duty, telling her he and the doctor would finish the shift. She snapped to attention before retreating smartly into the cave.
Julian leaned against the cliff edge just next to the cave, so Ben took up a similar position across the entryway. “So doctor, tell me about your first sunset.”
He heard a small chuckle from him before he began to speak.
“I was 4…it’s one of the few things I remember clearly from before.”
Ben’s eyes widened at this with surprise, the doctor rarely spoke about the years before his enhancements. Ben had never really considered it, beyond throwing it to the memory problems O’Brien had mentioned.
“We were on vacation in…France, if I recall right, and it was the most relaxing time. For once my parents weren’t arguing about my problems…erm…but you probably don’t want to hear about those.” He faltered, Ben had the impression he was suddenly embarrassed.
“Continue.”
“Erm…right.”
Ben frowned this time, detecting a faint quiver in Julian’s voice that hadn’t been there before. He glanced over at the young man, noticing for the first time that he was only wearing his turquoise turtleneck, uniform jacket still drying next to the fire in the cave.
“Doctor, are you cold?”
“No.” The visible shiver that Ben saw run through his body betrayed the lie. Ben was silent as Julian furtively rubbed his arms, trying to generate some heat from the friction.
“Nice try Julian. It might be getting dark, but it’s still twilight.” Julian froze, startled, and then stared at the ground, shifting uncomfortably. Belatedly, Ben realized part of that was his use of Julian’s first name. He filed aside the question of when he had started calling him Julian in his head for future ponderance. And without another thought, he swept off his uniform jacket and placed it around Julian’s shoulders before sliding to the ground, pulling Julian with him and wrapping his arm around his shoulders once they were both seated.
“Sir, I…”
“You’re freezing doctor. Besides, I’ve still got this vest.”
Julian shrugged after a few seconds and then drew his knees to his chest and leaned into Sisko for extra warmth. It still felt a bit awkward, but he couldn’t deny that the unusual actions were helping. He was already shivering less.
“Where was I sir?”
“France.”
“Ah, yes…”
He spoke for several more minutes as twilight gave way to night, and then listened to Sisko tell him about Jake’s first sunset. He was just starting to think it had been years since he had felt this relaxed in general, let alone with another person when the next person on guard duty exited the cave to give them a very odd look. Sisko pointedly ignored it and handed over the rifle before climbing to his feet, and Julian accepted his help getting up with only the smallest blush, which he knew couldn’t be seen in the darkness that surrounded them. The guard bid them goodnight as they disappeared into the cave.
When they were out of the guard’s hearing range, Julian handed the captain’s jacket back.
“Thank you sir, for that…”
“You needed it Julian.”
“Maybe…” he blushed again. “But all, the same, thanks.”
Ben took hold of Julian’s shoulder and turned him to look directly into his eyes with the light reflecting into the entrance tunnel from the fire.
“Anytime doctor. Anytime.”
And he found that as he watched Julian’s hazel eyes fill with warmth and the blush rise higher on his cheeks, he meant more than he had meant anything since Jennifer.
