Summary: Julian had a bad year in season 5. Ben will make it better.
“This has been one of the worst years I’ve ever had.”
“Oh? I don’t think so, doctor.”
“How do you figure?”
“Maybe when you look at it now, the year seems like it was a whole lot of trouble with very little reward, but I think you’ll see things differently in a decade or so.”
“Forgive me for saying so, captain, but I think you’re missing the point.”
“Am I? Sure, you were held as a prisoner , but you also made friends with General Martok and Sub-Commander V’Dara.”
“Maybe.”
“And maybe Zimmerman found out about your enhancements. But that also means you can really be yourself now, without fear.”
“Mmm.”
“Well, if you’re going to be stubborn about it, I can’t stop you. But you should know, I thought the first year on DS9 was going to be the worst of my life. Worse than losing Jennifer.”
“What changed?”
“I met a young man who was determined to make the best of things, who was too stubborn to give up no matter how many people shot him down. And I realized I’d rather spend the rest of my life in his company, enjoying adventures, than spend it teaching at the academy. He’s one of the few things that made life worth living again.”
“Who, sir? Jake?”
“No, not Jake. You, Julian.”
And he left the young doctor at the table, blushing in his wake. At the edge of the replimat, he just barely made out Bashir’s quiet words.
“Maybe this year hasn’t been so bad after all.”
